Confinement

After discussing figurative terms of constraint in class, what type of constraint do you think is most prominent throughout the book and which characters does it affect the most?

  1. I think that Blanca is affected most with her family’s rules and expectations. She is constrained from being with the one she loves, Pedro Tercero Garcia, because that is not what her father wants for her. Blanca was obligated to take the Count’s hand in marriage because of the pressures and expectations from her father. Esteban always wanted more. He wanted to be richer, to be part of a higher social class, and to be a politician, and Blanca is constrained by her father’s wishes for her.

  2. I think a constraint to class status is the most prominent in the book. It affects the members of the Trueba family most, especially Blanca and Alba. Both girls run into problems being with who they love and fitting in due to their social class. They are constantly fighting against the constraints and Esteban himself. It takes Blanca years before she is able to be with Pedro Tercero, and Alba doesn't even get to be with Miguel in the end.

  3. I agree with Rebecca in that Blanca and Alba are most constrained because of their class status. Both women eventually become persuaded to embrace socialist ideas, and have socialist lovers, but they can not be with who they love because their father and grandfather is a conservative senator. Esteban keeps both women away from their lovers for years.
