In your opinion, does it benefit Clara to be able to predict what will happen and create her own destiny, or does it hurt her?

  1. I think Clara's foresight has the potential to help her, but mostly hurts her. We see that her prediction of Rosa's death has a terrible effect on her and causes her to be mute for nine years. Her vision of her mother's death also causes her significant emotional trauma, though it also allows her to locate the missing part of her mother's body. She also predicts the large earthquake that injures Esteban and destroys Tres Marias. In theory, these predictions should help her and allow her to prevent terrible things from happening, however no one ever believes her. Because no one acts on her premonitions, they tend to cause her more harm than good because she has been unable to prevent the terrible things she sees.

  2. I have always thought that the ability to predict the future would be beneficial to whoever had it. However, in Clara's case, I have begun to believe that it actually hurts her. Like Rebecca said, she warns people by telling them what her visions are, but no one seems to really pay attention to her warnings.
Also, I feel like when people see the future, they tend to make their visions come true. It seems that if the person hadn't seen the vision, it wouldn't have come true. It's similar to a self-fulfilling prophecy. This, again, leads me to believe that Clara's gift is more of a curse. It's almost as if her destiny has been predetermined, and she's not free to change it due to her visions.

  3. I agree with Rebecca. All the visions that Clara has had have been terrible and ended up hurting her in some way. It would be different if she could actually do something to stop the visions from coming true because then they would be helpful. So far, her visions have either been caused by death or have lead to death or something else terrible. It seems that she makes certain decisions because of her visions and doesn't really think them through. She only goes along with it because her visons say it's going to come out that way. So if she has these visons and knows something terrible is going to happen, why doesn't she try to do something to stop it?

  4. It is a double-edge sword. On one side, she can predict the future and prepare for the future. However on the other hand, she just lets what she sees control her life. It does not matter what whether it is a good or bad thing about to happen because she just does and lets occur what she sees. She should instead take action to try to prevent the bad events from occurring. Fate and the future can be altered if you see it coming. The most obvious act of her letting something bad happen is when she marries Esteban simply because she sees it in her vision and not because of love. I believe if Clara could control her visions and her emotions when she gets the visions that she could easily help her and the people around her out.

  5. I agree with everyone who said it is not beneficial to be able to tell the future. I agree that it might be useful in some cases, but humans are not meant to change the future. I think that she has based her life on these powers, and on cases such as marrying Esteban, she could have married someone else if she didnt go along with her own prediction. Dhe essentially allows her preficitions to run her life.

  7. I agree with Jamie in that it is a double-edged sword type concept. The thing that irks me though is that even though Clara can predict the future, she does not do much to try and change it. For example, when Clara predicts that she will marry Esteban without even loving him, she accepts it. She does not even try and changer her future, so even though it is a benefit, she does not make it beneficial for her own self.

  8. In my opinion, Clara’s gift of clairvoyance hurts her. I believe this to be true because Clara went as far as to not speak for nine years because she was so hurt by Rosa’s death and she felt that her prediction could have caused it. Clara is happy beating to her own drum and being totally invested in her own separate world and not the same world as her family and everyone else, but her ability to see the future scares her and makes her feel responsible for people’s actions after she tells them what she sees. If this gift didn’t hurt her, I don’t think that Clara would have taken a vow of silence for nine years.

  9. Clara's ability to see into the future has its pros and cons. For the most part it is an advantage allowing her to know when something is about to happen. She predicted natural disasters something that could not just help her but help other saftey as well. The cons are mainly the emotional toll that it puts on her. Such as predicting rosa's death and other things causing her to be mute and diconnected from the rest of the characters
